PINEHURST

For this casual, completely rebuilt weekend home on the Chesapeake Bay, we relocated existing screening so that arriving guests would be treated to a stunning view of the Bay. A new walk through a stand of mature oaks draws the shore closer in feel. Low plantings on the waterside provide a natural foreground for the Bay’s spectacular sunsets. Ornamental grasses grouped on terraced slopes echo the undulating rhythm of wind and waves. A sheltered circular garden heralds the first blooms of spring, while the border opposite a favorite screened-in porch was designed as a butterfly garden brimming with summer perennials. Using mostly native material, the gardens require minimal care.
